Strontium aluminate vs zinc sulfide, powder-to-resin ratios, which glow colors are brightest, and the two-layer build that sells at markets.
Glow pieces are the undisputed champions of my market table. Adults pick up the pretty pendants; kids make a beeline for anything that glows, drag their parents over, and the parents end up buying both. If you sell resin work at all, glow powder pays for itself fast.
It’s also one of the easiest effects to get wrong in a boring way — weak glow, dead glow, gritty texture. All avoidable. Here’s the whole recipe.

There are two glow chemistries sold to crafters, and the difference is night and day. Literally.
Zinc sulfide is the old-school stuff — cheap, and it glows for maybe 5–10 minutes before fading to nothing. Strontium aluminate is the modern one: charges faster, glows 10x brighter, and keeps glowing for 4–8 hours. A strontium piece charged at bedtime is still faintly visible before sunrise.
My first glow attempt was an unlabeled jar of powder from a craft store clearance bin. The pendants glowed enthusiastically for about four minutes and died. I assumed I’d done something wrong and almost gave up on glow entirely — then learned it was zinc sulfide, and the failure was in the jar before I opened it. If the listing doesn’t say “strontium aluminate,” assume it’s zinc and skip it. Plenty of proper options on Amazon in the US and Canada; LIT-type premium powders exist too, but ordinary strontium aluminate at $15–20 per 100 g does the job.
Particle size matters for jewelry: 30–60 microns is the sweet spot. Coarser powder (100+ microns) glows noticeably brighter but feels gritty in a small smooth pendant — fine for coasters, wrong for a ring.
1 part powder to 4 parts resin by volume is my standard. You can push toward 1:1 for maximum glow, but the mix gets thick and pours like porridge. For most jewelry, 1:4 with good powder is genuinely bright.
Glow powder is inert like mica, so the cure is safe at these ratios — the 6% weight rule doesn’t really apply to mineral powders. What does apply: powder this dense sinks even faster than glitter. Mix at gel stage — same trick, same timing — or embrace the sink and make it the design (more below).
Green glows brightest and longest. Not close. Aqua/blue-green is second and my personal favorite — nearly green’s performance, prettier color. Blue is decent. Purple, pink, red, orange are progressively weaker; red-family glow is barely there.
The powder’s daytime color is usually pale and slightly greenish regardless of glow color, which brings up a trick: you can tint the resin lightly with mica or a drop of pigment to make the daytime piece pretty, without killing the glow. Keep the tint light — heavy pigment blocks both the charging light going in and the glow coming out. A whisper of color, no more.
Best glow piece construction I know: glow layer in the back, clear (or lightly tinted) layer in front.
Pour glow-loaded resin as the first layer into the mold — which becomes the back of the piece. Let it gel, then pour clear on top. The finished pendant looks refined by day, with the glow layer hidden like a secret, and at night the whole piece lights from behind. Depth plus glow. Deep pendant molds at 3/8 inch (10 mm) or more make room for both layers.
And if your powder sank in a single pour — congratulations, you accidentally made this design. The sunk layer at the mold face is exactly where you’d want it.
Strontium charges from any light, but UV charges it fastest: 30 seconds under a $12 UV flashlight equals ten minutes of sunlight. I keep one on my market table — hand a customer a pendant, hit it with the UV for a few seconds, and have them cup it in their hands. That little private glow in the shell of someone’s hands sells the piece better than anything I could say.
At home I test every glow batch in the darkest place available, which in my case is the basement bathroom with a towel against the door gap. My wife has learned not to ask why I’m standing in there in the dark holding earrings. Quality control looks different in every trade.
One practical note: cured glow resin looks slightly speckled-translucent by day, not water-clear. That’s the powder. Plan designs around it rather than fighting it — opaque backs, tinted layers, or honest “this is a glow piece” styling.
