How to Make Glitter Resin That Doesn’t Sink

Glitter sinking to the bottom of your resin? The gel-stage timing trick, flake sizes, layering, and the late re-stir — four fixes that work.

You stir in a generous scoop of glitter, the cup looks like a snow globe, you pour, you’re delighted. Next morning: all the glitter is lying in a dense layer at the bottom of the mold, and the rest of the piece is embarrassingly clear.

Every single one of us has made that piece. Glitter sinks because glitter is heavier than liquid resin — that’s the whole mystery. Fresh-mixed resin is thin, and thin liquid can’t hold metal and plastic flakes in suspension. Give it a few hours and physics wins.

But you can beat physics with timing. Here’s how.

Trick 1: wait for the gel stage

This solves 80% of it. Mix your resin, add nothing, and let the cup sit for 20–40 minutes (for a typical 1:1 jewelry resin at room temp — hotter room, shorter wait). The resin thickens as it starts curing, from maple-syrup thin toward honey.

Thick resin holds glitter. Stir your glitter in at the honey point, pour, and the flakes stay distributed — the resin sets before they can fall far.

The window is real, though. Wait too long and the resin is too thick to pour cleanly or release its bubbles. First time trying this, set a timer and check the cup every 10 minutes by lifting the stir stick: when it drips slow and ropey instead of streaming off, that’s your moment. And know your resin’s working time before gambling a big batch on it.

My glitter education: a set of keychains for my niece’s soccer team, twelve of them, poured with chunky silver glitter into fresh thin resin at 10 pm. By morning every keychain had a silver sediment floor and a clear body. The girls, being nine, thought the “hidden treasure at the bottom” was intentional and loved them. I said nothing. Reputation intact, lesson permanent.

Trick 2: go finer

Flake size changes fall speed dramatically. Ultrafine glitter (0.008″, about 0.2 mm) sinks so slowly that in a normal pour it barely settles at all. Chunky flakes drop like leaves.

So match the glitter to the job: ultrafine when you want an even sparkle throughout, chunky when the flakes are the feature — and combine them. Ultrafine mixed through the whole pour plus a pinch of chunky placed at gel stage gives that expensive scattered-depth look.

Trick 3: layer it

For deep molds, pour in thin layers — 1/8 inch (3 mm) or so — and glitter each one lightly. Each layer sets before its glitter can travel, and the finished piece has flakes suspended at every depth, which reads as genuine 3D sparkle instead of one glitter stratum.

Layer at gel stage, 3–5 hours apart, and the layers chemically bond invisible. It’s slower. It’s also the difference between “craft glitter” and the deep galaxy-glass look. Same principle as layering mica, one shelf over.

Trick 4: the late re-stir

For single mid-depth pours: come back 15–20 minutes after pouring and gently redistribute the glitter with a toothpick — small circles, right in the mold. The resin has thickened enough that the flakes you lift stay lifted.

Quick, slightly risky (stir gently or you’ll drag in bubbles), very effective for small pieces like pendants and cabochons.


Glitter that behaves, and glitter that doesn’t

Polyester craft glitter — the standard stuff from Michaels or Amazon — is resin-safe and colorfast. Holographic polyester is where the magic is; get one jar of holographic silver ultrafine before anything else and thank me later.

Watch out for bargain mystery glitter: some cheap metallic flakes are coated film that curls or bleeds color into resin. I had a red batch turn faintly pink around each flake once — dollar-store glitter, never again. And “bio glitter” (cellulose-based) absorbs resin and goes translucent, losing most of its sparkle. Beautiful idea, disappointing result.

One more thing, because it always comes up: if your glitter piece cured cloudy rather than sparkly, that’s usually not the glitter — that’s moisture or overworked resin, and the cloudiness article covers it.
