How to Use Mica Powder in Resin

Exact mica powder doses for resin, the premix trick that kills clumps and streaks, settling fixes, and layering techniques for depth.

Mica is the colorant I recommend to every beginner, and it’s still the one I use most after thousands of pours. It shimmers, it forgives mistakes, and it’s nearly impossible to ruin a batch with it. But there’s a small technique to getting that smooth, pearly, streak-free look — and nobody tells you the technique, they just say “add mica.”

So here’s the actual routine, clump problems and all.


What mica actually is

Ground mineral — literally the same stuff that makes some rocks sparkle — coated with pigments and oxides to produce different colors. It doesn’t dissolve in resin. The particles stay suspended, and that suspension is what creates the depth and shimmer.

Because it’s an inert mineral, it doesn’t touch the curing chemistry. That’s why it’s so forgiving compared to liquid colorants: overdo mica and your piece goes opaque, not soft.

How much to use

My baseline: 1/4 teaspoon per 1 oz (30 ml) of mixed resin.

That gives a solid pearly color with light still moving through it. Half that amount gets you a delicate translucent tint. Double it for opaque and metallic-looking. Past a full teaspoon per ounce you’re not adding color anymore, just thickness — the resin starts feeling like pancake batter and bubbles have a harder time escaping (why that matters).

The premix trick — this is the whole secret

Don’t dump powder into your full cup of resin. Mica arrives compacted in the jar, and those little clumps are stubborn. You’ll stir for five minutes, call it done, and find glitter-streaks of concentrated color in the cured piece.

Instead: pour a splash of mixed resin into a small cup, add the mica to that, and mash it against the wall of the cup with your stick until it’s a smooth paste. Takes thirty seconds. Then stir the paste into the rest of your resin. Silky, even, zero streaks.

I learned this after a batch of navy pendants came out looking bruised — dark streaks through lighter blue, like the color had varicose veins. Six pendants, all with the same flaw, because I’d colored the whole batch from one badly-mixed cup. The premix habit started the next day.

Stir until it stops surprising you

Streaks in the liquid mean keep going. And scrape the sides — mica loves clinging to the cup wall just above the resin line, and that ridge of dry powder falls in right as you pour. The slow stirring rules apply here same as with clear resin: fast whipping means bubbles.

One more winter note, since I pour in a converted spare room in Canada: in dry January air, mica jumps. Static makes the powder cling to your stick, the cup rim, your sleeve. I keep a slightly damp paper towel on the desk and wipe my tools between colors — it kills the static and the cross-color contamination in one move.

Mica settles. Plan for it.

In a thin pour, mica particles slowly sink while the resin cures. Usually that’s invisible. In a deep mold, it can mean the bottom of the piece (which becomes the front, remember, in most molds) is more saturated than the top.

Two ways to handle it. Stir the cup once more right before pouring — not earlier. Or lean into it: some of my favorite pieces have that gradient, denser color at the face fading toward the back. It photographs beautifully. Not every “flaw” needs fixing.

Layering is where mica gets good

Because mica keeps some translucency at normal doses, layers show through each other. A gold layer under emerald reads like sunlight in deep water. Silver under any dark color gives a cold metallic glow.

Pour the first layer, let it reach gel stage — tacky, doesn’t flow, roughly 3–5 hours for most 1:1 resins (working time vs. cure time explained) — then pour the next. The layers bond chemically and read as one deep piece.

That trick alone is most of what people call “advanced” resin coloring.

My pendant and earring molds are the shapes I test every mica technique in — deep enough to layer, glossy enough that the shimmer pops without polishing.


Quick answers

Does brand matter? Some. Pearl Ex is the gold standard; decent no-name sets are fine for most work, but coarse cheap mica can feel gritty in small jewelry.

Cosmetic-grade vs craft mica? Both work in resin. Cosmetic-grade is just certified skin-safe, which resin doesn’t care about.

Can you mix mica colors? Yes, and it’s more predictable than mixing paints — blend the powders dry first, then premix as usual.
